Elizabeth Smart

On June 5, 2002, the then 14-year-old was kidnapped from her family's home in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was rescued by police nine months later and has gone on to become an activist, author and ABC News contributor.

Tanya Kach

In February 1996, the then-14-year-old moved in with a man who'd been a security guard at her high school. When she tried to leave, he held her hostage. Kach endured 10 years of abuse and was forced to live by strict rules until she was able to escape.

Frank Sinatra Jr.

In 1963, the son of the legendary entertainer was kidnapped at gunpoint from a hotel in Lake Tahoe. His family paid a ransom to the kidnappers and was returned safely two days later. Sinatra Jr. went on to enjoy a successful music career of his own, passing away in March 2016 at age 72.

Patty Hearst

The media heiress was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974. She was held hostage for 19 months and sympathized to their cause, releasing propaganda material and helping them rob a bank. She was later rescued by the FBI and sentenced to prison. She was released after less than two years, though, when President Jimmy Carter commuted her prison term.

Michelle Knight

Knight was 21 when Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro abducted her in 2002 Along with Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, who were kidnapped in 2003 and 2004, she was able to escape with help from neighbors on May 6, 2013.

Gina DeJesus

In 2004, 14-year-old DeJesus was kidnapped by Castro. She was also able to escape on May 6, 2013.

Jaycee Dugard

Dugard was 11 years old when was kidnapped by Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy Garrido in 1991. She remained hostage, enduring years of abuse, until 2009. Dugard had two children while in captivity and has gone on to publish a best-selling memoir called A Stolen Life.
